Missouri Spider Guide: Brown Recluse, Black Widow, and Common House Spiders

Missouri is home to two medically significant spider species — the brown recluse and the southern black widow — and a wide range of common house spiders that cause alarm but pose no health risk. Understanding which species you have and where they prefer to live in Missouri homes guides the management approach.

Brown Recluse in Missouri Homes

Missouri is within the core range of the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) — the species is genuinely abundant here in a way that distinguishes Missouri from states where recluse sightings are rare. Brown recluses prefer undisturbed, dry, sheltered spaces: the interiors of cardboard boxes in storage, behind wall insulation in basements and garages, inside clothing or shoes left undisturbed, and in the structural wood cavities of older homes. They are nocturnal hunters that do not build webs to catch prey. Converting cardboard storage to sealed plastic bins and shaking out clothing or shoes that have been stored are the most practical personal protection steps in recluse-endemic Missouri homes.

Southern Black Widow

The southern black widow (Latrodectus mactans) is present throughout Missouri in sheltered outdoor locations — woodpiles, under decks, in outbuildings, and in undisturbed areas of basements and crawlspaces. The female's distinctive red hourglass marking on the shiny black abdomen is the reliable identification feature. Black widow bites cause systemic symptoms — muscle cramping, nausea, elevated blood pressure — rather than local tissue damage. Any confirmed or suspected black widow bite warrants medical evaluation. D&D Pest Control provides spider management programs for Franklin County and rural Missouri — visit ddpestcontrolmo.com.
